Sandy + Silver
Around 2001, we began researching horse rescues in Texas, not finding many with good websites or images. These were the days before Petfinder and Facebook existed. Back then it was word-of-mouth and telephone calls combined with emailed photos and thoughtful descriptions of animals in need of new homes. It was also before the horse market fell apart.
Through a friend of a friend, we found Silver, a five-year-old registered welsh pony, broke to drive and ride who had been “donated” to the rescue program by his previous owners. After an inspection of our farm and pastures, we were allowed to make an appointment with the foster family and drove to meet Silver. His grumpy and curmudgeonly personality convinced us he would be the perfect fit for our precocious and often confrontational five-year-old daughter.
Silver arrived via “The Easter Bunny” on a sunny Easter morning, and we were right. He is now 21 years old, the same age as Mary Lou, and they have had many adventures together as they’ve grown. He has been the right horse from the very beginning, and he will be the right horse for the rest of Mary’s life. We’ll always be grateful for the opportunity to adopt him.

This is what “right horse” means to me.
A fit for both horse and owner.
