Ashley + Lucky
I am a 30-year-young (I refuse to get “old”) passionate woman. I have been around horses my entire life, off and on. Growing up an army brat then being an army wife didn’t offer up the chance to be a horse owner, but there was always the desire. I have long helped as best I could to advocate for animal adoption rather than breeding and purchasing, as well as responsible breeding. I don’t half do anything. I am in it to win it. This is my story.
You tied me to a tree with my friends and said you would come back. We didn’t know why, but stood there and waited. We didn’t know what we had done. Then nobody came. I didn’t know what I had done wrong, but still I stood here with my friends. There wasn’t grass, grain or feed to eat. We still stood there. The sun rose and fell many times. Finally, two people came. They loaded us onto this thing. They said it was a trailer. They said we would all be safe. We rode for a while, scared and hungry. Finally, we stopped and the doors opened. One by one, the people unloaded us and walked us over to a pin. The people had food and water! I was thin, too thin, but some of my friends were even worse. We lost some of them. We were all sad. There came a time when one of the people told us that we were moving. Moving? Where? There is food every day here and water, too. The time came and we moved to a small farm with green pastures and more food and water! It was great. My friends and I were all gaining weight.
A few weeks passed and a new lady started coming out and helping the people feed us. She was nice to me and paid special attention to me. I grew to really enjoy her company. The new lady said I was Lucky, she told me we both found our luck with each other. She spent a lot of time with me, feeding, grooming, walking and even some easy riding. At first I was scared to let her get on my back. Would I hurt her? Would I do the wrong thing? But the lady was patient and always so encouraging. One day, the lady told me I would be staying on the farm! That this was now my HOME! A home! She promised she would love me and take care of me. I have grown to love her, too. She is my person. I think I will call her “mom.”
Mom told me I used to have another name, but I like the name she gave me…Lucky. I love to follow her around the pasture. We go for longer rides now, and I have even started to get comfortable with letting her get on my back. There is always grass, hay, water and feed. I can finally relax and feel safe.
Lucky’s rescue was a group effort. All it took was a few phone calls. He was still under weight when I started to sponsor him, but in that time has packed the majority of it back on. And even grew taller!
When I took him to have his coggins pulled and yearly vaccinations, the vet aged him for me and gave us some insight. He is a five-year-old who isn’t quite done growing, so I am expecting a little more height out of him.Overall, he is one of the best horses I have even ridden in my life. I couldn’t be more proud to call him mine. If you cannot care for your horse, please contact animal control or an equine rescue. There are good homes willing and ready to care for and love them.
This is what “right horse” means to me.
A “right horse” means not only you choosing a horse, but a horse also choosing you. The right horse is the one you can’t wait to ride. The one that you just have to go see after a long day at work. The horse that touches your heart and soul.
