Sugarfoot was about three days from death according to vet when she arrived at the horse rescue I was volunteering at. The owner of the rescue called to warn me, saying that Sherriff had seized four mares and that they were probably the worst case of neglect and starvation she had ever seen. I was not prepared for what I saw the first day I met Sugarfoot. The life seemed to have left her eyes and she couldn’t even hold her head up. Her skeletal state broke my heart, as I lay my hands to rest on the metal gate she was standing close too, I began to pray for her healing with tears rolling down my face she slowly moved her head and her nose briefly touched my hand.
I had not intended on adopting a horse that day, but in that moment, I knew I had to have her. It was an instant heart connection. She was not going to be able to be ridden due to injuries from who’s knows what, but it didn’t matter to me. I did not grow up with horses nor have had a lot of hands on experience, but Sugarfoot proved to be such a gentle and patient teacher. She was so kind and confident.
We had a younger horse that she was an amazing friend, and teacher to as well. Towards the end of her life she was used in photo shoots by a local photographer who had clients that wanted pictures taken with a horse. She was the perfect model. We sadly had to lay to rest in March of 2017, she will always remain my dearest horse friend.
What #RightHorse means to me
I absolutely believe that we have to stand against the “throw away” mentality that is so prevalent in our western culture. The Right Horse is standing & offering a solution to this issue by adding value to horses that others have labeled as not having any value. It means that horses that have been thrown away by others will become someone’s else treasure (cliché I know, but true). I am so thankful for this organization.
Thank you Joy! What a beautiful story you have❤️ I agree with you about our culture’s throw away mentality, and am too very thankful for the Right Horse. Thank you again!
Thank You for saving Sugarfoot and giving Her you’re Love and a caring home. So much more to say but….. Just Thank You… Rest easy Sweet Sugarfoot… ????????❤????????
