Jane + Dak

by | Apr 2017 | Story

My story involves the adoption of one of my horses. Working as an RN and knowing the animal sacrifices made in the medical field, I wanted to give back to them. It was time to look for another horse and I wanted it to be a rescue. I saw an article in an ASPCA magazine about the PMU industry listing several Equine Rescues that worked with the PMU industry to rehome horses. I immediately started researching them. I decided on the one that I wanted to work with, and had to choose a foal from so many. I selected one, paid the adoption fees and he was shipped to me in North Carolina from Canada. I adopted him at five months of age, and he turns 10 years old this year.

He and I have developed the most amazing relationship, and he is my world. We have graduated Parelli Level 3 and are currently enrolled in Karen Rohlf’s Dressage, Naturally Virtual Arena. My husband and I co-wrote a song about his adoption, Open Up Your Heart, and it is recorded on one of my husband’s CDs. My husband has performed the song live at fundraising events for a local equine rescue.

I would love to share the song and some pictures of “Dak.” After all, it was the article I read in the ASPCA magazine 11 years ago that prompted me to adopt from the PMU industry and changed my world forever. Thank you!

This is what “right horse” means to me.
The phrase “Right Horse” means that the horse has a suitable “horsenality,” high-energy, low-energy, fear-based, confident, that suits the human’s personality and the life the person intends to provide for the horse. The horse must be mentally, emotionally and physically capable of living the life the human expects from him. A horse is not a horse. Many horses are put under incredible stress by humans that don’t understand them or expect performance when the horse isn’t capable. When I adopted “Dak,” I was prepared to serve his needs. It turns out he was just perfect for me as we both love the trail!
